BECOME A TRIP LEADER!

Long Island Paddlers is as active, welcoming and enjoyable as it is — all year round — because of our dedicated team of Volunteers and our caring crew of Volunteer Trip Leaders!

Learn how to plan out and conduct safe and enjoyable group trips on the water, and improve your own paddling skills at the same time!

Each year, beginning in the early Spring, we offer a formal peer training program to interested members, and we support you every step of the way! Training is conducted via in-person workshops, on-the-water training sessions and trip-leader only trips. Your first few trips will have assistance from experienced trip leaders, and you will get to know other trip leaders who can co-lead with you on future trips. You can even earn points for leading trips, which can be used towards Club merchandise and special events!

By the start of peak kayaking season, you will learn:

  • How to Map & Plan Club Trips based on the tides, currents, channels, and other location conditions
  • How to Post & Manage Club Trips
  • How to Lead Group Trips with on-the-water communication and risk mitigation techniques
  • Kayak Gear Essentials, including how to use a VHF Radio
  • Kayak Safety Essentials
  • Kayak Self-Rescue and Assisted Rescue

Training is led by:
Mike Matty, LIP Safety Coordinator and an ACA Instructor
Chris Fleming, LIP Trips Coordinator

If you are interested in joining the ranks and contributing to the Club as a trip leader, or if you have any questions, please contact usWe look forward to hearing from you!
